As we are faced with the day-to-day changes in the society in which we live as well as pressures of globalization, we notice that larger numbers of workers and communities are seeking to deepen their understanding of the ongoing working class struggle and the role of trade unions and community organizations in transforming society.

Coming Together of Academic and Experiential Learning

At Workers College KZN there is a coming together of academic and experiential learning. Here we facilitate access and change by using resources effectively and responsibly. As a sustainable resource organisation we believe our resources must be ploughed back into the constituencies we serve.

The College sees the delivery of “education” achieving three broad outcomes:

  • Engagement with, and acquisition of, relevant knowledge and information
  • Developing skills and practice around critical thinking and analysis, which includeslooking at alternatives
  • Practical application of such knowledge and analysis

Information and Knowledge for the Broader Collective

Information and knowledge should never be used to advance individual economic interests alone rather than the broader collective, especially when resources are considered.

Trade Unions need to Communicate Effectively

Trade Unions and community organizations are organs of civil society who need to be able to represent their members effectively within the context within which they operate. They also need to be able to communicate effectively at all levels across the spectrum and need to be able to think and operate outside their comfort paradigms.

The challenge for Worker’s College KwaZulu Natal is to develop a cadre of activists who can critically apply the knowledge, skills to their situations in the workplace, communities, organizations and society; to stimulate the need for further learning and creative thinking that they can take back into their organizations.

The Labor Movement Needs to Build Capacity

Labor, government and business need to work together to find solutions to South Africa’s economic and social challenges and in particular, find ways to strive for a labor market that is conducive to economic growth investment and job creation.

In order to fulfill this mandate, the labor movement needs build the capacity of its cadres on an accelerated and ongoing basis. It is very important that shop stewards, union leaders, women workers, leaders, and union staff members not only know their rights and are able to exercise them, but have access to education, growth and most of all – resources.

We Develop Materials that Challenge our Students

At Workers College KZN we develop materials that challenge our students; we focus on topics and issues that have wide ranging implications – that will stretch our students to the fullest. The engagement is our classrooms is lively as we encourage feedback, input and dialogue. And assignments are set, not only in line with the curriculum, but also to lure the minds of our students to always walk that extra mile.

We are very proud of our alumni. Since 199? Workers College KZN has turned out a large number of graduates.
