Workers’ College Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) is located on 3rd Floor, James Bolton House, 127 Maphalala Magwaza (Gale) Street. Durban, South Africa.
The College facilitates a variety of courses and programs for trade unionists and community activists from within South Africa as well as the African continent.
Addressing imbalances of the past and the denial of rights and opportunities to access formal and higher education as a result of racism, economic exploitation as elitism has become one of the objectives of Workers’ College KZN.
The Workers College programs are easily accessible to working adults. The content is practical and based on or linked to issues in the workplace, community or real life scenarios.
The learning methods are interactive, inclusive and participatory.
Preamble to the Constitution The Preamble to the Constitution of the Workers College (KwaZulu-Natal) adopted on 1992 states, whereas:
Larger numbers of workers and communities are seeking to deepen their understanding of working class struggle and the role of trade unions and community organizations in transforming society.
This Workers’ College is committed to:
- providing education to workers and to worker leaders and communities that empower them and their members
- developing educational practices that sustain the participatory and critical learning processes
- promoting the values of open debate, democracy and nondiscrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion or political affiliation
- promoting competent and efficient trade union and community organizations.
Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives shall be:
- To provide educational opportunities at an advanced level for students selected from participating trade unions and community organizations
- To develop worker leadership by providing education on theory and a range of practical and technical skills
- To foster interest in an understanding of the principles and history of the working class movement
- To initiate support changes at existing education institutions with regard to the development of successful education for workers
- To inculcate amongst College students and all workers the spirit of progressive trade union unity and solidarity within South Africa, Southern Africa, Africa and internationally.
