Degree Programme [Part-time Degree in Social Sciences for Trade Unionists & Community Organisations (Industrial & Working Life)

The part-time degree in Social Sciences, called the Industrial & Working Life Project, is a joint effort of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and the Workers’ College.

Every Friday trade unionists and community activists, who have registered for this degree, attend classes at the University of Natal. Some of the classes they attend with the full-time students of the University and other classes are specially designed for them.

The degree includes courses that develop both their skills (Academic Learning in English, Research Methods, Computer Literacy, Internet Expertise) and theoretical knowledge (Individual, State & Society, Sociology).

Entry into the degree programme is based on whether the ‘student’ has completed one or more of the Workers’ College diplomas. This means that if the trade unionist has done the Workers’ College 1-year diploma, a matriculation pass is not necessary. The diplomas are recognised as university courses.
