The Coordinating team of the African Labour Educators' Network (ALEN) from Workers' College visited the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) from 24 - 26 Nov. 2008 in Lilongwe, where their Head Offices are, and Blantyre. The mission was to meet the Secretariat of MCTU and the leadership of the affiliates of MCTU.
Two meeting were held with the affiliates, one in Lilongwe and the other in Blantyre. At these meetings the Coordinating team presented in detail the approach and programmes of the ALEN and of the Workers' College, and thereafter discussions were held with the Secretariat of MCTU to determine the way forward in MCTU becoming p[art of the Network and adopting some of the ALEN programmes.
Corrie Roeper, the FNV Mondiaal Africa Representative, visited the Workers' College on Wed. 27 August 2008, to meet with staff, students and facilitators of the College's programmes.
Part of her mission was to find out how the Workers' College has re-defined its programmes to meet with challenges like xenophobia, the growing economic crises that face workers and the general populace, and the ongoing casualisation of work that reduces labour to slavery.
The FNV Mondiaal, is the international arm of the Dutch trade union federation, FNV, and it supports the African Labour Educators' Network (ALEN) which is jointly coordinated by the Workers' College. For more pictures see Gallery.
Workers’ College KZN will be hosting representatives from the OTM (trade union federation from Mozambique) for a three-day workshop in developing collaboration with them in education – from 29 July to 2 August 2008. The Mozambique Delegation consists of:

Simião Simbine, Representative of UNI-SASK in Mozambique.
The 19th Annual PLA Conference began Wednesday afternoon May 28 with a plenary session focusing on the application of PLA and adult learning in South Africa, South America and Canada. Members of the panel include Kessie Moodley, Director of Workers’ College, Durban, South Africa, Maria Hueichaqueo, Executive Director, Tain Akimn (Mapuche) Santiago, Chile, Luis Maldonado, Director, School for Indigenous Governance (Quechua) Ibarra, Ecuador and Janice Hill, Academic Dean, FNTI. Panelists described how they implemented PLA and portfolio development in their organizations in relation to improving services to learners and their communities. Translation was provided.
